Miner Elementary School is excited and proud to be selected as one of five DCPS schools to receive funding and training to implement innovative schoolyard greening projects through the DC Department of Energy & Environment’s (DDOE) RiverSmart Schools (RSS) program. The RSS effort at Miner will be targeted to the early childhood outdoor space, which currently consists of a playground and garden. The two-year long project will aim to teach gardening and community service skills to students, provide wildlife habitat, improve the aesthetics of the school grounds and build student/community pride.
The Miner administration, Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), and Pre-K Parent Committee all look forward to working collaboratively with DOEE, the Department of General Services, and DCPS to transform Miner’s early childhood playground and garden into an amazing instructional and recreational space for the benefit of our youngest Bears. Thanks go out to Katy Thomas, the Miner PTO Civic Liaison, for authoring the grant application on behalf of Miner.
