FEB 8: School Forum & Open House @ 5pm

2/3/2017

You may be in boundary, currently enrolled, or just an interested neighbor, but we are inviting everyone to come learn about our school and learn about school change, DCPS, and more about Miner.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8 from 5-7pm
  • Informal Q&A Session with Joe Weedon, Ward 6 Board of Education rep (and Maury + Eliot Hine Parent) and Miner parents
  • Our FINAL open house of the lottery season
SCHEDULE:
  • 5:00pm - Meet in Foyer and proceed to Parent Volunteer Center
  • 5:10-5:30 - Meet our Principal, teachers, Early Childhood Education Coordinator
  • 5:30 - 5:45 - School Tour
  • 6:00 - Meet in the Large Group Instruction Room (above the Miner Library) for Q&A Session
Why this event?
Our ECE committee and parent volunteers have navigated the lottery together, hosted playdates, and our PK4 families are excited for our cohort's transition to Kindergarten. But each year, our enrollment at Miner as continued to decrease and our diversity has remained unchanged as many neighborhood families opt to change schools after PK3/4.
  • Why is Miner one of the best facilities in the neighborhood, but still has difficulty enrolling and retaining neighborhood kids who live within blocks of the school?
  • Why hasn't DCPS invested resources to help Miner and Payne improve, which will serve to alleviate the overcrowding at Maury, versus investing millions in Maury? Don't we want three great schools and not two struggling schools and one great school? And what about our feeder middle school? Are DCPS, the council, and the Mayor helping those most at risk in our Title I schools with this proposed funding allocation?
