USA Science & Engineering Festival Guest Speaker

3/23/2018

Miner Elementary School Welcomes Dr. Janet Hubka!

Picture
Presentation and Q&A: Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 10:00 AM in the Miner Gymnasium

Miner is hosting a very special event April 5, and you’re invited!  As part of the USA Science & Engineering Festival “Nifty Fifty” series, we will have a very special guest speaker who will speak with Miner’s students and parents about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). This is the second year in a row that our school has been honored with a guest STEM speaker as part of the USA Science & Engineering Festival.

This year Miner welcomes Dr. Janet Hubka!  Dr. Hubka uses scientific art (immunofluorescent images) of human cells as the foundation of her talk: "The Art of Science: Taking Art to the Cellular Level." The initial engagement for the students is the amazing beauty of the cells within our bodies, stem cells, etc.  Then Dr. Hubka discusses how the body regenerates tissue or organs after injury and what scientists are doing in their labs to help facilitate their discovery. This includes stem cell research on the International Space Station and their challenges, and stem cell research at the San Diego Zoo and TSRI to help save the Northern White Rhino from extinction.

More information about Dr. Hubka can be found here: usasciencefestival.org/people/janet-hubka/

Thank You! Spring Break "Survival Packs"

3/22/2018

On behalf of the PTO's Appreciation and Recognition Committee, we would like to thank the families who donated items for the spring break survival packs for Miner staff! The packs with donated baked goods, granola bars, crackers, and chocolate were left in the staff mailboxes this morning. Thanks for everyone's flexibility with dropping off items given yesterday's snow day. We really appreciate everyone's help in showing our support to Miner staff!

Have a great spring break,
Justin and Jessica Burniske

Thank You! March Community Day

3/18/2018

We had an incredible turnout yesterday for our first Miner Community Day of 2018! Thank you so much to those who came out to assist with the four activities on hand:

  • "Go Green" spring cleanup day - the grounds are now trash-free and look great!
  • First Garden Work Day of 2018 with our partner Cultivate the City - we're ready to get growing this spring!
  • Assembly of new picnic tables for the north field - thanks to grants from Capitol Hill Community Foundation and ANC6A!
  • First Playdate for incoming & prospective families - we look forward to your family joining ours this fall!

Principal Jackson and Dr. King joined our group of families and community members, as did some of our incredible Miner teachers!  Thank you Miner staff! The day was made possible via the generous donations of our Move!Play!Grow! sponsors.

Our upcoming Community Days are Saturday, April 21, and Saturday, May 19. We hope you'll be able to join us for one or both of those events.

Seeking Miner "Ambassadors"

3/9/2018

At Tuesday’s PTO meeting, Principal Jackson informed us that the number of common school lottery applications listing Miner has exceeded last year, with a great majority of them placing Miner either first, second, or third in their list. We’re very pleased that so many families are considering our school!

To help parents learn more about Miner, our teachers, our programs, and our community, the PTO and PreK Parent Committee are sponsoring a series of playdates this spring and summer for incoming and prospective families of all grade levels. We always encourage current families to join in the fun and chat with parents who have decided to join the Miner family in the fall and with those still making their final decision.

This year we’re trying something a bit different and would like to form a cadre of parent “ambassadors” who will commit to coming to at least one playdate to meet with incoming and prospective families. If you’re interested, please see the signup form here: https://goo.gl/forms/9uBf37fUFARqk8Mj2.

The playdates for spring are March 17, April 21, and May 19 (all Saturdays). Dates for summer playdates will be determined later.

Thank you all for being a part of the Miner family and helping us strengthen and grow our school community!

SAVE THE DATE!

“Go Green” Spring Cleanup Day & Playdate
Saturday, March 17, 2018
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

With Spring just around the corner, the Miner administration and Parent Teacher Organization will be hosting a spring cleaning day to tidy up the school grounds and gardens. We will also be hosting our first playdate for incoming and prospective families: the north playgrounds will be open, and Miner’s bounce castle will be up and running. It’s also St. Patrick’s Day, so there will be green lemonade on hand for thirsty volunteers and playdate participants.

We hope you'll come out and join us to help with spring cleaning and/or to participate in the playdate.

Please note: tools and supplies at the school are very limited, so if you have any landscaping maintenance tools, please consider bringing them.

Thank you all and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday the 17th!
