On Saturday, October 23, Miner's 3rd-5th DC Scores Soccer Teams participated in Fall Frenzy with other teams from across the city. It was a fun-filled day of soccer games, team building, and fun for players and families alike, with appearances from Talon (the mascot for DC United), PK (the mascot for Washington Spirit), and players from Washington Spirit! Thank you so much to our amazing coaches Mr. Gee and Ms. Hopkins for their leadership of our girls and boys DC Scores teams!
The 3rd-5th Grade LEGO Engineering Club met for the first time during recess on Friday, October 22! Over 40 students participated, and it was a lot of fun for all! Our club will be meeting weekly and could use some additional LEGOs to support our young engineers. If you have any LEGOs you'd be willing to donate, please reach out to Ms. Hillenbrand at [email protected].
Ms. Smith and Ms. Jones' PreK class have been observing how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly and today have the opportunity to release their new friends back into the wild.
The Miner community welcomes Ms. LaToya Coleman as Miner's new Assistant Principal! AP Coleman has served over 16 years in public school education. She began her tenure in Prince George’s County Public Schools where she was an elementary school teacher. After earning her Standard and Professional certification from the Maryland Department of Education, she served 8 years teaching 2nd grade. She joined the District of Columbia Public Schools in 2013 where she was selected as a Capital Commitment Fellow. This program was designed to highlight the top 50 new recruits to the district. These individuals had a track record of success with students and would become teacher leaders in DCPS. Ms. Coleman served as a 3rd and 4th grade math teacher before becoming a Math Instructional Coach. In 2019, Ms. Coleman was promoted to serve as the AP at Payne Elementary School. Ms. Coleman holds an OSSE Teaching Certification for grades PreK3 - 6th and OSSE Standard Administrative Services Credentials. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Coppin State University and a Master of Arts for K-12 Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix. AP Coleman states: "I am a fair and active leader that models with actions, makes decisions with care, and learns by listening. I am excited to serve the Miner School Community as your Assistant Principal for the 2021-2022 SY." On Saturday, October 16, Miner's Community School program, along with the Miner PTO, sponsored a First Aid/CPR certification class conducted by the American Red Cross. Thank you all for making this important resource available to the Miner community!
On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, Miner's Mighty DC Scores Jr team (1st & 2nd graders) participated in DC Scores' annual "Fall Frenzy" celebration at the Fields at RFK. This family-friendly event brought together all the DC Scores Jr teams for a fun afternoon of soccer games, activities, healthy snacks, and music. Thank you Ms. Mears and Ms. Jackson for coaching our Jr Bears!
Dear Parents and Families of Miner Elementary School,
As Miner’s Principal for School Year 2021-2022, I am committed to helping our school provide joyful and rigorous educational experiences geared toward the learning and success of all students. Communicating home about school leadership updates is a critical part of maintaining strong partnerships with families. As some of you may know, I suffered a recent accident that required surgery. As a result of this incident, and upon the insistence of my doctor, I will be on medical leave until December 15th. I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be able to come back to work as I had hoped. However, I believe that taking this time now will enable me to come back focused and without limitations. I have great faith in the incredible Miner leadership team and our teachers and staff to maintain our student’s continued growth and success. During my leave, Instructional Superintendent Stover has assigned Sean Bellamy, current assistant principal of J.O. Wilson, to provide administrative coverage, as well as support to Assistant Principal Coleman, Ms. Offor, and Ms. Woodson. Mr. Bellamy will be on site at least four days a week, starting Tuesday, October 19. Additionally, members of the Cluster IV Support Team will provide extra support and coverage, maintaining a consistent schedule at the school. It is important to us all that our students continue to receive a high-quality education and that staff changes do not drastically impact their learning. Miner will continue to be the loving, challenging environment in which we know our scholars can thrive! If you have further questions, please contact Instructional Superintendent Stover at [email protected]. Sincerely, Katrel Angry Principal, Miner Elementary School Miner Mutual Aid Network Community Table |
