Dear Miner Elementary School Community,

I am excited and honored to be joining the Miner Elementary School family as the interim principal. My hope for our work together this year is that we can build on the great things already happening at Miner Elementary School and ensure our students excel in every way.  
I have already heard so many good things about Miner and I cannot wait to get started by meeting as many members of the school community as possible.  Over the next few weeks I will be reaching out to extend opportunities for meet and greet events so that I can begin to hear all of the hopes we have for Miner this year.  

As Chancellor Wilson stated in his letter to the community, I have most recently served as a Mary Jane Patterson Fellow at Charles Hart Middle School.  Prior to that I have served as an educational aide, teacher, special education coordinator, and assistant principal at Walker-Jones EC, MacFarland MS, Garfield ES and Cardozo EC.  I received my Bachelor’s degree from Westfield State University in Massachusetts, the state where I was born and raised, before moving to Washington, DC to complete my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at American University.  I am truly humbled to serve in this new role at Miner Elementary School for the upcoming school year.    

I firmly believe a leader is only as strong as the team they work with and therefore I am excited to announce two new additions that will be joining me on the leadership team at Miner:

Camille Anderson will serve as the school’s new assistant principal.  Ms. Anderson comes to Miner from Ketcham Elementary School where she has served as an instructional coach during School Year 2016- 2017. In addition to the Instructional Coach role, Ms. Anderson has also served the district as an RTI Coach, Teacher Lead, and Teacher at Ketcham Elementary School. Ms. Anderson received her Bachelor’s in International Relations from Mount Holyoke College and her Master’s in Teaching from American University. 

As some of you know, the current MSL, Ms. Flores, will be transitioning to a different DCPS School. We thank her for her service at Miner and wish her the best of luck in her new endeavor.  As a result, I welcome Dr. Simon King who will be joining Miner as the Director of Strategy and Logistics for the campus. Most recently, Dr. King has served as the Director of Strategy and Logistics at Walker-Jones Education Campus. Prior to joining DCPS, Dr. King worked as an assistant principal with Prince Williams County Schools in Virginia. King received his Doctorate in Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, his Master’s in Education Leadership from Old Dominion University, and his Bachelor’s in English from Talladega College.  
 
Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Anderson and Dr. King to the team.  All three of us are eager to get to know the school community and join with you in providing a dynamic education for all of our scholars. 

Please consider joining us for an informal meet and greet event at Miner Elementary School on July 26th.  I will be hosting a Popsicle with the Principal event on the playground at Miner from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.  Please bring your family out and enjoy a cold treat along with some music and fun.  We will reach out with additional opportunities in the near future!  Feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions.

Dear Miner Community:

As you know, Principal Mial has been on leave during the spring of this year. In order to maintain the academic progress at Miner and ensure a seamless transition for the upcoming school year, I have made the decision to appoint Bruce Jackson as the interim principal for School Year 2017-2018.

Traditionally, we conduct panel interviews with community members before selecting a new principal. However, given the timing of this change in leadership, we wanted to move quickly in sharing future plans for the campus. Mr. Jackson’s appointment as interim principal will begin immediately, and he will have all of duties and responsibilities of an interim principal at this time.

Prior to assuming the interim principal role at Miner, Jackson served as a Mary Jane Patterson Fellow at Hart Middle School for School Year 2016-2017. Before taking part in the Patterson Fellowship, Jackson worked as an assistant principal with DCPS at Cardozo EC as well as a special education coordinator and special education teacher at MacFarland MS, and a special education aide at Walker-Jones EC. In 2017, Jackson won the prestigious Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective Leadership as part of the DCPS Standing Ovation Awards. Jackson received his Bachelor’s in political science from Westfield State University and his master’s in curriculum and instruction from American University.

I am confident that Mr. Jackson’s experience has prepared him for this opportunity to continue the progress you have made with your students. I look forward to continuing to work closely with the Miner community to ensure the long-term success of the school.
