A Vision for Miner - A letter from Dr. Evans and our PTO President

Dear Miner families, teachers, staff, and community members,

We began a new school year at Miner last week and we are excited and anxious to settle into our routines and plans. Our students’ energy and excitement is wonderful to see in the classrooms and on the playgrounds.

Welcome back! Or, if this is your first year at Miner, then: Welcome!


We would like to inform and invite you, as parents, teachers, staff and community members, to take part in a number of different efforts we are championing to build Miner into an even better school and create closer bonds between one another as neighbors, families, and partners in education.

n the coming months, there will be many ways for you to become more involved at Miner. There will be both big and small ways for you to share your ideas, donate your time, or lead programs.

The list below shows some of the new and ongoing family engagement opportunities at Miner. If you are interested in learning more or being a member of any of them, please contact one of us. 


  • Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) – The PTO will be working on various activities to support the school and bring parents and students closer together, such as: literacy nights, fundraisers, and teacher appreciation days. Become a member or nominate yourself for a leadership role. Our first meeting will be September 22, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. at Miner. 
  • LSAT (Local School Advisory Team) – Every DCPS school has a group of parents, teachers and staff members called the LSAT.  This team advises the principal on items like curriculum options, budget, school goals and monitoring student progress. You will see nomination forms soon and election dates in a few weeks.
  • Visioning Team – This is a small group of volunteers seeking to help create a long-term vision for Miner’s success. With only one meeting so far, the Visioning Team has hopes of reaching every Miner family, teacher, staff member, and student to determine our collective goals for the school. The Visioning Team will work closely with the LSAT and PTO to develop a long-term, hopeful vision for Miner to become even better. You can join a visioning team committee, or just look out for surveys, invitations, or other information from the team. 


Even if you decide not to volunteer specifically for any of these efforts, expect to see letters sent home, emails, posts to our Facebook page, or even surveys and telephone calls to you, so we can be sure that your ideas and opinions are heard and you have an opportunity to be part of the great things happening at Miner.

Everyone in our community is always welcome at Miner PTO events; LSAT meetings are open for non-elected members to attend; our Visioning Team is excited to talk with all of our stakeholders; and, as always, we are happy to talk with you personally.

We look forward to working together to make Miner an even better place for our children.
