Message From the Principal -Monday, 11/17

Dear Mighty Miner Bears,

We are one week away from Thanksgiving and already two weeks into 2nd quarter. These next few weeks are full of family and community events! Every grade level is hosting a parent/family event in the next week. See below to find out what day your child's classroom will be hosting families.

We are also quickly approaching the PTO annual Greenery Sale and Baked Goods Fundraiser! Please join us on Friday, 12/5 from 5 pm - 8 pm and Saturday, 12/6 9 am - 2 pm. The Holiday Greenery Pre-Sale is officially live! Families can now pre-order trees, wreaths, garland, and cookie decorating kits (generously baked by one of our Miner parents/chefs) at minerelementary.org/greenery2025. This year, families can also:

  • Donate to help make trees more affordable for others, or

  • Request a “Silver Tree” at no cost

Our students have many incredible events happening as well! This week is a Staff Underground Spirit Week! Every day, the staff have a different themed dress up day....and the kids are guessing the the theme for the day! Monday was Decades Day! Mr. Yoho and Ms. Mclane were rocking the 70's, Ms. Jones repped the 80's and I put in my best side ponytail for my tribute to the 90's (and Saved by the Bell!). All week we'll have the students guess our dress up theme.

We also started several new activities and programs for students. For the first time in several years, we have a Girls' Basketball Team! We have 12 girls who are practicing three times and week and working hard to bring home the W's. Our next game is Wednesday, 11/19 at Randall-Highlands. We'll have our first home game on Monday, 12/1 at 4:30 pm. We also started a new program for Student Ambassadors. These are 2 - 3 students in every grade level who will serve as Miner ambassadors to help welcome in new students. The students have put in their applications and are really excited to show our new students how great Miner is!

We've also started our weekly i-Ready challenge! The students and the class who complete the most i-Ready lessons during the week will be announced each Monday. The #1 class overall is Martin’s class, leading the way with an outstanding average of 7.88 lessons passed! This amazing class will celebrate on Tuesday with a cocoa party or special drinks for lunch—way to set the bar high for excellence!

We also want to celebrate our Top Finishers who worked hard this week on their i-Ready lessons:

Top Finisher in Grades 3–5: Chanel D. (Grade 3, Ms. Daniyan) with an incredible 17 lessons passed! Also in the top 15 students: Ahmeera Y. In the Classrooms....

Spotlight on 3rd - 5th Grades!

Our oldest students are really rolling up their sleeves and digging into the work to be better readers, writers, and mathematicians.

3rd Grade has been hard at work researching and writing about animals and their habitats. The students studied different characteristics of animals, and then chose one to research. They are now working to write their informational essay, and create a habitat to match. Families will be welcomed in on Monday, 11/24 to see their hardwork and celebrate the incredible research and writing of our students! In math, they continue to work on adding and subtracting three digit numbers and practicing their multiplication facts.

4th Grade is finishing their unit on the Middle Ages and writing opinion paragraphs based on text evidence. In math, they are getting ready to tackle long division!

5th Grade is studying how three major time periods (The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl, and The Harlem Renaissance) influenced American art. They are studying the social impacts of each time period and comparing how it influenced artists. They are working on main idea and details as well as looking forward to their next field trip. In Math, our 5th graders are working on order of operations as well as solving two step word problems.
