Support the Miner Community
*IMPORTANT UPDATE*
November 1, 2025: On October 29, we launched a rapid response to support Miner families who might be affected by the potential loss of SNAP benefits during the government shutdown. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of generosity, from donations to volunteer sign-ups. We raised over $3K and all the volunteer slots were filled within the first day.
On October 30, Mayor Bowser announced that the District will use contingency funds to cover SNAP benefits for the month of November. This means that the most immediate food insecurity concerns we were preparing for have eased—at least temporarily. In light of this change, we will not be holding the planned food distribution this Wednesday. Instead, the Miner PTO will establish a designated Family Food Support Fund within our budget to ensure that resources raised continue to meet the original intent: supporting Miner families facing food insecurity.
Over the coming weeks, we will work with local partners to organize a holiday food distribution in November and/or before the school break in December, when families may experience greater need while school is closed.
If your family needs immediate support, please reach out directly to Miner’s administration team for assistance or available resources. You may also see the link below for reference.
Thank you again for responding so quickly and generously to this effort. Your compassion and commitment to our Miner community make all the difference.

October 29, 2025: As the government shutdown threatens to interrupt SNAP (food assistance) benefits, many Miner Elementary families are facing an immediate gap in access to groceries.
The Miner PTO is coordinating an emergency effort to ensure no Miner family goes hungry during this uncertain time. Here’s what we’re doing:
We’re raising funds to purchase food in bulk through local stores and wholesalers. All donations between October 29 and November 2 will go directly to purchasing food and supplies for Miner families.
Volunteers will sort food and pack “family bags” with pantry staples. Packing will happen Monday, November 3 (Records Day, no school for students) from 9a-12p in (2) 1.5 hour shifts. Sign up to volunteer.
Distribution will take place Wednesday, November 5, from 4–6 PM at Miner Elementary.
THANK YOU!
Financial and in-kind donations from our families, friends, neighbors, and community at-large are vital to supporting Miner students, families, and the Miner community at large. Now more than ever, we need each other.
Please note that for all donation types, the Miner PTO is a 501c(3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible. Please contact the PTO at minerpto@gmail.com if you would like a tax receipt for your donation.
