Vision for School Improvement

What is Visioning?
The process of Visioning is the deliberate attempt to bring about a long-term strategic plan for our school through a process of collaboration and inclusive outreach that takes into consideration all of our stakeholders. The eventual outcome will be a school of choice in our neighborhood.
It is easy for a well-organized group to step in and push a single agenda, but as a community, we recognize that it is not any one group’s role to make decisions on behalf of our whole community. Instead, we agree that our stakeholders must come together to ensure that all voices are heard, no groups are excluded, and that the growing, diverse community at Miner can stand behind the process and be proud of its results.
By December 2015, we will have hosted an education forum, engaged in a sample stakeholder survey, developed our draft Vision, and will be in the process of developing a thorough outreach plan to shape our next steps - eventually resulting in a strategic plan that we can present to DCPS.
It sounds like a lot of work, and it is.
Our Impact
Already we have seen changes at Miner. We have drawn in new energy and volunteers, engaged our elected officials, and have the attention of our DCPS leaders. By organizing on behalf of our school, we are starting to see support for positive change.
At our first Visioning meeting, we agreed that the end result of our efforts result in a student body at Miner that:
loves learning and feels challenged
thrives academically, socially, and emotionally—beyond the test
feels cared for, safe, and supported
is culturally competent
feels like they belong to a community
has had a variety of experiences inside and outside of the classroom
has made made lifelong friends
has had a true childhood
We plan to assess Miner’s strengths and shortcomings, gather representative data about our community’s desires, and develop an action plan that will close the achievement gap, increase enrollment and retention, and become a school of choice that values the diversity of our neighborhood.
Get Involved
Our work has only just begun. We need volunteers who can:
gather survey data
share their own experiences and desires
research and analyze data
join our efforts as we share the process, build trust, and live up to our values of inclusion and collaboration
