Summer Update...

Dear Miner Families!


I hope this note finds you beating the heat as we work our way through the middle of July!  The heat has not slowed down any of the amazing things happening here at Miner over the summer.  Below are lots of updates and “save the dates”.  Please take a moment and check out all the things coming our way over the next few weeks!  There’s a lot of information in this update.


Save the Dates!

• Tuesday, 7/30  - “Popsicles with the Principal” for all families on Tuesday, 7/30 at the Rosedale Recreation Center from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm.  Please come out and meet me (Dr. B) and the two new assistant Principals (Ms. Bosurgi and Ms. Mills).  We’ll also have some handouts for early childhood families as well as other resources and flyers.  Looking forward to seeing you then!

 

• Thursday, 8/1 – Class lists will be published!  We will publish class lists and teacher assignments for all students who have completed enrollments!  Still need to enroll your student?  Enroll here!

 

• Friday, 8/23 – Back to School Bash from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Miner.  We will have a cookout, tons of information, giveaways, resources, and tours of the new building!  Don’t miss this great afternoon to kickoff the 2024-2025 school year!

 

• Monday, 8/26 – First Day of School for K – 5th Grade!

 

• Thursday, 8/29 – First Day of School for PK3 and PK4

 

• Monday, 9/2 – Labor Day, No School

Operations and Facilities Updates

• The modernization at the “Old Miner” building is rolling right along!  The crews are putting the finishing touches on the building and we are set for substantial completion and handover to DCPS in the next couple of weeks.  The rooms are bright and sunny, the paint colors are beautiful and the playground is looking really fun!  We’ve assigned the classrooms and are working are creating all the new logistics for this incredible new home for our PK3 and Pk4 students. 

 

• Our current school building is also getting a lot of TLC!  Every room and space in the hallway is being repainted this summer, complete with bright accent walls.  We are scrubbing and waxing the floors and making sure that our spaces are clean and welcoming.  Every classroom also got a brand new classroom library. 

 

• The Community Day Care center process is also moving right along!  The construction on the classrooms is well underway as 5 of our classrooms become the new home to the infants and toddlers.  The construction is expected to be completed early winter.  Our committee made up of Miner families and community members has also done a blind review of the proposals for the new vendor.  We are in the final stages of choosing the new vendor to provide the day care services.  We will keep you posted.

Student Activities

• We are working hard to ensure lots of great activities, teams, and clubs for students for the 2024-2025 school year.  This includes restarting our DC Scores partnership and the following DCIAA athletic teams for 4th and 5th grade students:  Girls and Boys Basketball in the Winter and Girls and Boys Track in the Spring. If you think your 4th or 5th grade student will want to participate, start working on completing their physical now!  Assistant Principal Bosurgi is our athletic director.  You can reach out to her with any questions ([email protected])

 

• This year we will also have a new Performing Arts Teacher and a new Music Teacher.  They are already planning our Spring Musical!    Stay tuned for more student clubs and activities headed your way.

 
Field Trips

• For 2024-2025 we are committed to ensuring that every grade level goes on at least 1 – 2 field trips during the year.  First up will be our 5th grade overnight class trip to NatureBridge on September 18th – September 20th.  We are soooooo excited for our 5th graders to have this amazing overnight outdoor education experience.  Lots more information coming to you as the school year gets under way.

 

• As a reminder, any parent who wishes to chaperone must have a volunteer clearance on file.  Once you complete the online clearance application and have your fingerprints cleared, the clearance lasts for two years.  Summer is a great time to get that done!  Complete the DCPS Clearance Application.  Once you have your clearance letter, email it to [email protected].

               
General Reminders and Announcements

• Still need to register for Before or After Care?  Here’s the  registration flyer.  Everyday Play N’Learn is still accepting applications.  Need financial support, please email Dr. B at [email protected]
• Send in your enrollment paperwork to be included in the class lists being published 8/1! 
• Checkout our updated website and Instagram account and follow all the great stuff at Miner.
• Need to get your child’s immunizations or physical updated?  Checkout this flyer for dates for DC Health Hubs.  The next one is Thursday, 7/25 at Eliot Hine from 11:30 am – 3:30 pm.  If you need free glasses or immunization, pre-register here:  Health Hub Pre-Registration

• In 2024-2025 we will continue to be uniform optional.  If your child chooses to wear a uniform, our colors are navy blue bottoms and a white top.  Our PTO will also have spirit wear for sale soon!  Need help with uniforms?  Email Sha’Lisa Richardson our Community School Coordinator at [email protected].
