SY20-21 Ballot for
LSAT Parent Representatives &
PTO Executive Board

Thank you for participating in the 2020-21 PTO and LSAT Election.  We appreciate your continued support of Miner Elementary School!

Each family may cast only one ballot

    LSAT Parent Representatives

Vote for up to four candidates - Only Miner parents and guardians may vote for these candidates

    Candidate Statements

    Marissa Gunn, K Parent:
Now more than ever it is important that parent and community member voices be heard for the benefit of all our children. I want to amplify the voices that are often ignored, disregarded, or unheard, make sure that none of our children are being left behind, and make sure that all view points and perspectives are being considered in decision making.

    Latoya McCarthy-Scott, K Parent:
I would like to be a parent representative on LSAT because I would like to ensure there is diversity in parent representation.

David Treat, 3rd grade and K Parent:
I am the proud father of two Miner scholars and this is my family’s sixth year at Miner. Each year I have had the honor of serving the Miner community in some role: PTO president, secretary, and Community Engagement Committee chairperson; LSAT parent representative; and most lately as co-facilitator for the Miner Equity Team. I believe that Miner has the potential to be a truly great neighborhood and community school. I have fought for years toward that goal, and am proud of the improvements and positive changes that have benefited all Miner students and families. We still have a lot of work to do, and that is why I’m running for LSAT parent representative: to work with Miner’s administration to ensure that our hard-won progress continues and that every Miner scholar receives a great social, emotional, and academic education.

Bernadette Wittschen, 2nd grade and PK4 Parent:
As a parent and employee of DCPS it is my goal for Miner to become one of the highest achieving elementary schools in the district. I hope to collaborate through the LSAT with the Miner Leadership Team to ensure that all Miner students receive what they need to learn and grow both academically and social emotionally.

    PTO Executive Board

Vote for one candidate per position - All Miner parents, guardians, teachers, and staff may vote for these candidates

    PTO President

    Candidate Statements

Julie Muir / 1st grade and PK4 Parent:
This school year marks the start of my 4th year as a parent at Miner, and I continue to be amazed by the people I have met along the way. I love working together with parents, teachers, and staff to do everything possible to make Miner a great school for ALL children in ALL grades. The additions of Kindred and the Equity Team at Miner have been so huge in creating relationships and dialogues, and I hope to build on that in this very uncertain time of virtual learning and pandemic parenting. Things will definitely look different this school year, but I'm looking forward to finding new and creative ways to help our students, their families, and their teachers and staff make the best of the situation.

    PTO Vice President

    Candidate Statements

    Brandon Scott / K Parent:
I believe that the PTO Leadership needs to be a more equitable representation of the majority of the students and families that make up the Miner Community. I wish to serve as a member of the PTO Leadership in order to ensure that all families of Miner are equally represented, engaged and feel that their voices are heard and opinions are valued.

Portia Terry / 4th grade and PK3 Parent:
I would like to run for VP again because I love Miner and I feel like I didn't get to spread my wings far enough last year. I would like the opportunity to be able to move forward for our Miner Children and Families.

    PTO Treasurer
There are no nominees for PTO Treasurer

    PTO Secretary

    Candidate Statements

Amy Treat / 3rd grade and K Parent:
I have been a parent at Miner ES for over 5 years (WOW!) and feel that communicating information is an important part of building our school community.

    PTO Teacher Representative

    Candidate Statements

Ms. Emma Halley, Special Education Teacher 3rd-5th grade, SLS:
I am a second year teacher here at Miner and I loved getting more involved in the school community over the past year. I am hoping to expand my involvement into being the Teacher Representative for the PTO. As an educator that works with a wide grade band, I am able to connect with many families and I work with a large grouping of colleagues on a day-to-day basis. In this role, I would hope to leverage those connections to help strengthen our PTO membership and to ensure that the voices of all staff are heard at PTO meetings. I am very passionate about our school and our school community and would love to be a part of the PTO board for the current school year. I am currently working with DCPS and Flamboyan as part of their Family Engagement Collaborative. This Professional Learning Community serves as a way to connect with other teachers across the District and help form strong, long-lasting relationships with families and community members. I would love to bring the knowledge gained from this opportunity to the PTO, specifically through being a part of the engagement committees.
